Approximately 75% of the U.S. military in Japan is located in Okinawa, and 11% of the land area of Okinawa is occupied by the U.S. military forces. The U.S. military occupation is affecting local people, the economy and the environment in Okinawa. The anti-U.S. military base movement in Okinawa has been active since the occupation started and continues now with a philosophy of nonviolence. It is a serious issue of peace and fundamental human rights for the people of Okinawa.
